Deborah A. Repass, AACP, RP is an American Alliance Certified Paralegal and a PACE Registered Paralegal practicing in the areas of litigation, legislative and regulatory compliance, transactional negotiation, bankruptcy, creditor's rights, corporate governance, and governmental relations. A member of the National Capital Area Paralegal Association (NCAPA), she served on the board in several capacities, including NCAPA's primary representative for the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA). Debbie served NFPA as Vice President of Profession Development and Ethics Coordinator. During that time she wrote the "The Ethical Wall - Its Application to Paralegals." The paper is available on NFPA's website and Westlaw. While serving as NCAPA's representative to the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Associations, Debbie helped draft proposed Rule 10 to the Rules of the Supreme Court of Virginia defining the unauthorized practice of paralegals. Debbie has been a guest speaker at education conferences on ethics, the future of the paralegal profession, paralegal regulation, and PACE. Her work promoting paralegals has been published in various professional journals, including the National Paralegal Reporter, bar association newsletters, and paralegal association newsletters. She graduated magna cum laude from George Mason University with a BIS in Paralegal Studies.
Laura Ahtes, AACP, RP, DCP, is a bankruptcy paralegal for Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP in Wilmington, Delaware. She obtained her degree from Goldey Beacom College and graduated with honors from Widener University’s Paralegal Certificate Program in 1989. Laura has been a paralegal for 19 years. She currently serves on the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc. Board of Directors, a national paralegal association, as Education Director and is a founding member. Laura received the American Alliance “AACP” designation in May 2006. She has been an active member of the Delaware Paralegal Association (“DPA”) for 19 years. She is a past President of DPA. During Laura's tenure as President of DPA (2003-2005), she successfully finalized DPA's revision of its paralegal definition, first Code of Ethics, first Education Statement and "What is a Paralegal?" pamphlet. Also, Laura drafted and finalized for DPA's Issues Committee, the Delaware Certified Paralegal Program ("DCP") approved by DPA in May 2005. She received her Delaware Paralegal Association DCP designation in December 2005. Having served on the DPA Board of Directors for 11 years she held various other positions including: Board Advisor, Public Relations Director and Bar Liaison, NFPA Secondary and Primary Representatives, Mentor, PACE Ambassador, and Director-At-Large. In 1997, she was honored to receive the DPA “Paralegal of the Year Award”. Laura successfully passed the PACE exam and received her RP designation in 1999. She was a participant in the PACE Overview Committee for the creation of the PACE exam and was elected and served as the Region IV Director for the National Federation of Paralegal Associations in 2002. She also served as the Paralegal Chair for the Delaware Combined Campaign for Justice in 2003. Laura is currently the Chair of the Delaware State Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee, a member of the Widener University's Paralegal Program Advisory Board and past member of the Widener University’s Technology Committee. Laura also currently serves on the Delaware Pro Bono Inn of Court Executive Committee and is a member of the American Inn. She was invited as the Graduation Speaker for the 2006 class and addressed the Paralegal Certificate recipients at Widener University on May 22, 2006. Laura recently was a panel member for the IOMA Audio Conference “How to Effectively Utilize Paralegals to Increase Retention and Firm Profits” held on April 13, 2007.
Karen is a Senior Paralegal for GTx, Inc., a men’s health biotech company, in Memphis, Tennessee. She works in the corporate area and is responsible for SEC Reporting and Filings, Board/Annual Meetings, and is Administrator of the Company’s Stock Option Plans. She served on the Board of Directors of the Memphis Paralegal Association (“MPA”) from May 2000 to September 2004 and has also served as a delegate to the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (“NFPA”) since 2000. Karen has nine years’ experience as a paralegal. She obtained her paralegal certificate in 1990.
Barbara has worked as a paralegal for over 20 years. She earned her bachelors degree and paralegal certificate from the University of Delaware. She is a past President of the Delaware Paralegal Association, serving on the association Board for 15 years, and served as Treasurer with NFPA. She currently serves as Treasurer for AAPI, having been appointed by the board in May 2006 to fill the vacated treasurer position. Barbara is a Corporate Paralegal with E.I du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware, where she is the Antitrust Compliance Audit Coordinator and chairs the Paralegal Mentoring Committee. She currently co-chairs the Delaware State Bar Association Paralegal Committee. Barbara serves on the advisory board of the Howard High School Legal Administrative Assistant program where she is a mentor, and in 2007 the program presented their first Academic Achievement Award and Scholarship in her name along with the Delaware Paralegal Association. Barbara was chosen the Legal Assistant Today magazine Paralegal of The Year for 2004. A charter member of the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc., Barbara holds the certifications of American Alliance Certified Paralegal, PACE Registered Paralegal, and Delaware Certified Paralegal.
Angela M. Baker-Colyer, AACP received her Bachelors degree in Paralegal Studies from the College of Mount Saint Joseph. She has been employed as a Corporate Paralegal with Western-Southern Life Insurance Company since January 2000, working in the areas of litigation, employment law, and real estate. She has been a member of the American Alliance of Paralegals, Inc. since June 2004 and has served as Certification Coordinator. She became an American Alliance Certified Paralegal on June 23, 2005. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Cincinnati Paralegal Association since 2001, holding the positions of Paralegal Referral Chair, First Vice President, Liaison/Public Relations Chair, President and Parliamentarian. She participates in many CPA committee activities and volunteers for the Wills for Heroes events sponsored by the CPA.
Carolyn M. Saenz, AACP, is Senior Paralegal at Western-Southern Life Insurance Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, where she has been employed since 1995. She practices in the area of employment law, intellectual property law, and corporate law. She is a founding member of the American Alliance of Paralegals, serving as Director of Membership, and she is an American Alliance Certified Paralegal. A member of the Cincinnati Paralegal Association (CPA) for over 25 years, Saenz has served three terms as President, as well as other positions on the Board. She is an adjunct instructor at The College of Mt. Saint Joseph and a member of its Paralegal Advisory Council. Saenz was formerly Membership Director of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) and is recipient of NFPA’s Paralegal of the Year award. She also received the CPA’s Professional Achievement Award. Saenz appeared before the American Bar Association’s Commission on Non-Lawyer Practice presenting written and oral testimony regarding the regulation of paralegals, and has authored many articles including co-authoring with Deborah McKinney, JD “How to Hire a Quality Paralegal” and “Do Paralegals Need to be Certified?” published in the Cincinnati Bar Report. Saenz is a columnist for Legal Assistant Today. Her education includes a bachelor of science and an associate degree from the University of Cincinnati, and an associate degree from the University of East Anglia, England.
John C. Goudie has been a practicing paralegal for more than 20 years, primarily in the areas of personal injury and workers compensation, both plaintiff and insurance defense. John was one of the first non-lawyers to represent injured employees in workers compensation claims in Wisconsin, having obtained his license to appear before the administrative agency in Wisconsin in 1989. John represented injured employees in workers compensation claims for more than 14 years. Recently, John has changed career paths, and is employed in the legal department of Assurant Health as a Compliance Policy Analyst in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. John is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a degree in Economics and Industrial Sociology, and holds a paralegal certificate from Concordia University – Wisconsin, which he obtained in 1987. John has been a member of the Paralegal Association of Wisconsin since 1987 and has served that Association as Vice President, President, NFPA Primary and Secondary and currently serves as the Association’s National Affairs Representative. Additionally, John served as Co-Chair of the NFPA Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services from 1995 – 1997. John was a founding member of the Wisconsin State Bar Task Force on Paralegal Regulation from 1996 – 2004 which drafted the paralegal licensure petition that is before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. John has been a frequent speaker for state and national organizations on the topics of paralegal regulation, paralegal ethics, litigation topics for paralegals and workers compensation topics. John is the co-author of a seminar manual “Discovery Skills for Paralegals” which is utilized by the Institute for Paralegal Education.
